George Feature and Department Design

Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S. · June 1998 – July 1999 · George, monthly, national newsstand

Art Director: Matt Berman Senior Designer: Paul Morris

George ran politics as popular culture on a national newsstand, so its front- and back-of-book departments had to hold senators, rappers and Federal Reserve governors inside one monthly grid without the joke going flat.

What I made

Features, front-of-book and back-of-book pages, plus logos and marks for the magazine. Most of what survives is PRIMARIES, the front-of-book department: a red-and-blue flag logotype, then whatever the story needs beneath it — a full-bleed Kissinger portrait, Johnny Cash reversed on white, Elizabeth Dole drawn as a paper doll with call-outs, a J.C. Watts timeline climbing the page in cut-out fragments, party pages collaged from dozens of small frames on the diagonal. Also the PLAYERS department, the Contributors page, and two Editor's Letters signed by John F. Kennedy Jr.
