Wenner Media Special Advertising Sections
Wenner Media · 2006–07 · Rolling Stone and Men's Journal — promotion design: special advertising sections, plus one unpublished sales proposal
Creative Director: Thom Allcock Art Director: Paul Morris
Wenner sold advertisers custom sections inside three very different titles, so each one had to sound like the magazine it sat in — Rolling Stone's music voice, Men's Journal's gear voice — on a sales close rather than an editorial one.

What I made
Nine units across two titles. For Rolling Stone, a BP and MTV cross-promotion — "ON ASSIGNMENT", six aspiring journalists shot as a colour strip of portraits — running to a Lollapalooza follow-up. For Men's Journal, a Jeep pair splitting weekday and weekend gear either side of the same vehicle with a product rail down the right edge, and a Chrysler Sebring drive story, "top down ADVENTURES", mapped against a mosaic of destinations. Then a MINI Cooper proposal: a complete dummy magazine for the Hammer & Coop campaign.
Outcome
Gary Armstrong, Chief Marketing Officer — Rolling Stone, Us Weekly, Men's Journal: "His work was sophisticated, yet communicated a cleverly mass appeal as well… His designs are articulate and emotional — pleasing clients and sales people alike."
